enrolled into the Civil War on Aug 28 1862 to the 9th Ohio Volunteer
cavalry Company A ,Thomas was discharged in Lexington NC on July 20 1865

he died pouring over
the books of his "Chapman's Confectionary" on the corner of Sheild St.,
Newark.
Howard had a heart attack.
Ran a grocery store in Gratiot, OH & lived
in the house behind it that
was attached.
Homer married Bessie May German, b. 31 Jan. 1880 Gratiot, Muskingum Co., OH

Her father died before she was born - & had no
other siblings by
Aurenious German.
From Donna Paxton ..My dad got her red hair as did another brother of
his.
Grandma said that everyone would come to her & rub her hair for
healing.
It
was a superstition, I guess, that one who was born never seeing their
father
had powers of healing. (strange - but interesting)

He owned the pool hall in Newark (I think he only half owned it
maybe. I'll ask dad)
They had 2 daughters. One daughter had one son the other
had 3 sons & she gave them middle names Berry, Chapman.
3) Maurice
Hubert Chapman b. 16 March 1907 Hopewell Twp., Licking CO., OH
d. 29 Jan. 1971 Orlando FL
(he was in a Primitive
Baptist Church where he was to get up & preach.
Grandma thought he had
fallen asleep on her shoulder
& kept nudging him.
He had died of a heart attack. He had his first
heart attack in his 50's).
Buried in Wilson Cem., Licking Co., OH People came from all over the
country to the funeral, which was like a week later. He was a wonderful
preacher!
Married: Hazel Beatrice Claggett in Newcastle, Indiana 9 Oct. 1930
(they wanted to be married by
their favorite preacher - so drove there to get married - but always
lived in Newark) .
Hazel was born .12 Jan. 1910 Licking Co., OH d. 18 Jan. 1992

He married Mary Magdeline Steirs, 10 Oct 1912 in Muskingum County
Zanesville.

Services for Mrs. Lillie Irvin,
75, who died Sunday at 11 a.m. at her home in Gratiot, will be held
Wednesday at
2 p.m. in Gratiot Methodist church with Rev. C. E. Bulen in charge.
Burial will
be in Wesley Union cemetery near White Cottage.
Although Mrs. Irvin had been in failing health for some time, she had been
seriously ill for only two days. She had spent practically her entire life in
Gratiot where she was a member of the Methodist church and the Missionary
society. The former Miss Lillie Chapman, she married Dr. Frank Wortman in 1903,
who died in 1905. In 1908 she was wedded to Adam R. Irvin of Gratiot who
preceded her in death nine years.
Surviving are a step-daughter, Mrs. Roy F. (May) Ardrey of Gratiot; three
step-sons, William A. Irvin of Gratiot, Harry B. Irvin of Zanesville, and Ross
Irvin of Pleasant Valley; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Campbell of Philo; four
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The body was to have been removed from Thompson and Son funeral home in White
Cottage to the residence early today.
